Purchase: I won these half chaps from Horse Tack Review almost a year ago. From local tack stores, the Ariat Cameo Chaps cost approximately $150.00 Cdn, the Changers (which you buy separately cost approximately $30.00 Cdn).
Likes: Right out of the package they were buttery soft. Ariat offers a bunch of different chap widths and lengths to fit almost any rider - their size chart was very helpful. The chaps come with a plain leather placket to velcro on and off. You can buy other styles (I won one set with the half chaps). While it was hard to get the chaps on at first (I ordered them just a tad tight as leather does stretch), after just a few rides, they fit like a glove. The oiled full-grain leather is amazingly soft but not slouchy, and the moderate spanish cut topline is beautiful. The first few rides in these half chaps were training rides. Working with difficult horses in a variety of conditions. I was almost sad to break such beautiful chaps in like that, but they have stood up just fine! I have worn them for hacking, training and then in shows. Just a light brush off with some tack cleaner and a soft rag, and these beauties shine.
Dislikes: I'm having a hard time coming up with anything to dislike about the Ariat Cameo chaps. If I had to pick.. and I mean dig for something to pick at.. it would be one tiny thing. Ariat cleverly put a small leather pull on each zipper tab so they're easier to grasp and do up. One of the leather zipper pulls wore off after two months of riding. I'm not sure why, but it's not a huge deal. I haven't replaced it and don't really miss it that much. The snaps at the bottom can sometimes be hard to close, but I think it's a matter of the angle which you close them at.
Quality: Oiled full grain leather chaps with a stretch leather back panel. Moderate spanish cut topline. Unlined. Contoured leather skirt. Reinforced inside panel (to protect against wear when you're riding). These chaps are a thing of beauty.
Summary: I'm so glad I ended up with these half chaps. Had I bought them, I would say that they're worth every penny. Instead, I have to thank Horse Tack Review again and again for these chaps. They're absolutely awesome and when they do finally wear out (I think it'll take a long, long time) I will definitely buy another pair. The only reason I'm giving this a 5 is because there's no 6!
