Purchase: I bought a Thornhill Vienna II dressage saddle barely used off of Ebay last spring. I was very lucky and bought it for $600. and the new price is about $895.
My previous saddle was a Miller Klimke, 18.5 seat and a wide tree according to Miller's. As my Arabian mare developed, she needed a wider tree....
Likes: After riding in the saddle the first month, and using saddle soap on it a few times, normal grippiness developed in the seat and the shiny look faded to a gentle gleam.
This saddle has NO other issues at all.
Dislikes: The leather on the seat and knee areas had a"lacquer" type glaze on it, like a painted on finish. Right away I don't like that. Not only was it impervious to conditioners, it looked very slippery! Unwisely, I used a kitchen scrubby on the seat and so I accidentally scratched it a little. Don't bother doing that.
Quality: The Vienna II I have is a 19 inch seat and a 34cm tree. It fits both my 14.3 hh Arab and a 16.1 hh Percheron/TB cross I also ride. It is supple, extremely well made, comfortable both for the horse and the rider. I learned the sitting trot in it and I have never felt anything but comfy. People make nice comments about how it looks and are amazed when I tell them what it cost.
Summary: I would definitely try this saddle if you have any budget concerns at all. The quality and comfort will amaze you.
I just wish they wouldn't shine that seat leather!
