Purchase: A friend of mine is into Parelli and let me try out the Parelli Bareback Pad she ordered. She swears by it for her horses. At the time of this review, and from the Parelli website, it costs $235.75 US.
Likes: The suede top provides ample grip, and the medical felt under-pad seems to cushion the horses back nicely. It's a nice looking bareback pad. Looking at the Parelli website, I see it comes in a variety of colours to suit individual taste (my friend ordered black).
Dislikes: The D-rings and latigos which come with the bareback pad felt very bulky underneath my leg when done up. It was so uncomfortable that I had to shift a few times to relieve the pressure points they were starting to cause.
Quality: Leather suede seat with a medical felt under-pad. It has a leather loop style handle on the front for the rider to grip on, plus D-rings and latigos for a western cinch (which is not included).
Summary: A nice bareback pad but I think a lot of the price tag comes from the name stamped in the leather: Parelli. I have no doubt that it's comfortable for the horse, and in all honesty it is comfortable to ride in, but there's nothing so glaringly special about this pad to warrant an over $300 price tag (when you factor in taxes and shipping). I'd recommend that if someone wanted to try riding bareback with a pad, they first buy a cheaper version (available from various manufacturers in several styles) for around $60 before committing to such a hefty expense as the Parelli Bareback Pad. For the die-hard Parelli fan, this product may be a 5 but I'll have to rate it a 3. The price tag alone makes me turn pale.
