Purchase: To keep things organized at horses shows, my coach uses RubberMaid storage bins for all of her gear. I liked her idea, so went out and bought a few for myself.
They're available at many different stores (Wal-Mart, building supply stores, etc) in several different sizes. They seem to range in price from around $5.00 Cdn (on sale) for the smallest storage bins to around $15.00 Cdn (on sale) for the largest.
Likes: Available in lots of different sizes, these totes are perfect for all of my horse gear. I use the smallest one to hold all of my horse shampoos, liniments, sprays and tack cleaning supplies so they don't tip over or get scattered around.
I use a larger one to hold odds and ends that I'd need throughout the course of a show: a few sets of polo wraps, support boots, my show number, jump bats, a pair of half chaps, bits, etc..
Dislikes: There's nothing really to dislike about these. They're so versatile.
Quality: Shatter resistant bins with built-in handles. Snap on lids, and stackable.
The larger containers seem to have a heavier grade of plastic so they're able to handle heavier loads. I haven't tried yet, but I'd imagine that the largest bin could hold a saddle plus fittings and a few other things.
Available in a 3 gallon size to a 54 gallon size for the RubberMaid Roughneck storage bins. (I find the Roughneck ones the most suited for holding horse gear).
Summary: Some people may prefer a more traditional wooden tack box to hold their gear, but these RubberMaid Roughneck bins are perfect for me.
I like the range of sizes, how their handles are built (very easy to carry), the quality (they're very tough) and even the colour choice. They seem to come out with new colours every season, so these would look neat if you could find some to match barn colours.
A simple product that'll be around our barn, and our show stalls, for a long time!
