Purchase: Our old stock tank de-icer was starting to fail so we needed a new one. Even though the water trough is insulted and half covered, thick ice still forms without some sort of heater.
Victoria Feeds - The Horse & Hound in Lindsay, Ontario, Canada sells the Farm Innovators Inc. Floating Stock Tank De-Icer (Model H-418 / Safe in Plastic Tanks) for around $40.00 Cdn.
Likes: This unit is smaller than our old one, but is more powerful. It's 1250 W / 10.4 A. I like that on the box the heater came in, there's a photo showing this products performance versus another heater. It shows two stock tanks full of water and side by side - one with the Farm Innovators Inc heater, and one with a traditional 1500 W heater (both floating) in -10F / -23C conditions with 30PMH winds. Both tanks are uncovered and don't look to be insulated. The traditional floating heater has barely melted the ice surface on the tank, the Farm Innovators Inc heater is almost done melting the ice on the tank.
The test photo is pretty accurate as this heater does an excellent job of de-icing our tank under harsh conditions. And for only $40.00, it's a great price.
Dislikes: It's not really a dislike, but it's something that makes us wonder. Traditional stock tank de-icers have a plug-in cable that attaches to the top of the unit, the floater is in the bottom. The Farm Innovators Inc heater has the floater at the top, and the cable coming out from the bottom of the unit. It just seems like a bit of an odd design, but we haven't had any problems with it yet.
Quality: Ice Chaser premium cast aluminum, thermostatically controlled, floating stock tank de-icer. 1250 watts of power. This is the model to get for plastic tanks (they sell other models for metal tanks). It also comes with a 3 year warranty.
Summary: A great stock tank de-icer, this one really blows the competition out of the water (no pun intended)!
