Lined Hay Bag
Stable Accessories

Manufacturer: Procraft
Model: Lined Hay Bag
Category: Stable Accessories

Purchase: I bought two of these from County Supply (horse.com) for $12 each because my horses were wasting hay by stepping on it in their stalls. They came by mail on Wednesday of last week (today is Monday).

Likes: I wish I could say something, like I like the color selection or something like that, but the truth is, they come in red and blue and Country Supply was sold out of red so I bought blue. The truth is, I like nothing about these hay bags.

Dislikes: Apart from the lack of color selection, they are horrible hay bags. The claps on the strap is very stiff and hard to use. They have a single strap rather than two, so they just twist around and make it hard for the horse to eat. Because they have a front hole and no grate on the front, the horses waste just as much hay as they were when I just threw the hay on the floor of the stall (okay, maybe a little less because the hay bags are so small that they only hold a flake of hay at a time). They're very small, and really don't fit enough hay for a full sized adult horse. Lastly, I've been using these once a day for less than a week and they are both destroyed and full of holes and rips. Now, my horses aren't super gentle but they aren't really aggressive, either. They are two average, middle-aged mares. If they can't hold up to an average horse, they aren't worth it. I'll be returning them this week.

Quality: According to the website: "This fully lined hay bag comes with a strong nylon strap and snap closure. It is easy to carry and easy to hang. Large opening at the top makes filling a breeze. Approx. 26 ½" x 23" size." The truth is that they are very difficult to put hay in to. I think the nylon strap is the only thing that is strong, because it seems to be outlasting the hay bag. It is easy to carry, although not as easy as my grill-faced ones (although it weighs less because it is so small). Mine ripped in less than a week, and that's what I have to say about quality!

Summary: NOT a good hay bag. I suggest Tough-1 Heavy Denier grill front hay bags. I have two of those and they are easy to fill, easy to carry, easy to attach anyplace, and don't rip! This one isn't meant for horses...maybe for sheep?
