Purchase: Some of the stitching on one of our old saddles had started to come undone. My husband picked up the Speedy Stitcher Sewing Awl from a Co-Op store in Sunderland, Ontario, Canada.
It was $9.95 Cdn without taxes.
Likes: The unit comes with everything you'd need to make a repair: a small roll of waxed thread, the stitcher, a thread bobbin, one curved needle and one straight needle.
The stitcher is heavy duty and hasn't broken or bent, regardless of what we've repaired with it.
Dislikes: Finding the Stitcher is fairly easy - finding the thread separately is hard.
I suppose you could always use waxed braiding thread in an emergency, but I don't know how it would hold up since it's different than the thread you're supposed to use.
Quality: Smoothed and glazed wooden handle holds the bobbin inside, plus has two little storage areas inside the head for both needles (when not in use).
The box says this stitcher can be used to sew any heavy material: awnings, tents, sails, handbags, upholstery, auto tops, shoes, saddles or any type of sporting equipment.
Summary: I've seen similar models to this at around $40.00 for the kit (from tack stores) so I guess this was a pretty good deal.
It has been a handy tool for us to have around, but I'm going to give it a 4 since the thread can be hard to find in stores.
