Purchase: Nelson Horse Waterers are probably the most popular on the market. It is an extremely well known company with many satisfied customers. I have used them in my outdoor turnout fields. The outdoor field waterer cost around $500, but the price can differ depending on options. The company sells them direct through a catalog.
Likes: I like the unit because it saves me from lugging water buckets. In addition, the water can be heated in the winter, so I don't have to worry about frozen water. It is made of tough stainless steel and it is fairly horse resistant.
Dislikes: There are a few things that I do not like about the Nelson waterer. One is that the horse only receives water out of a small bowl, big enough for him muzzle to drink. This is ok most of the time, except when the power goes out there is no other water reserve for the horses. I have seen other models from different companies that have almost a 10 gallon tank that is always full, so even if the power does go out, the horses still have access to water. In addition, the bowl should be cleaned very frequently because it collects dirt from the horses mouth. Plus, removing the bowl and rinsing it can be sort of a pain.
Quality: Th general quality of the unit is great. However the top and bowl insert does have some delicate parts in it. A horse could do some damage to the bowl and bend it, causing it to be difficult to remove and function.
Summary: I think nelson waterers and automatic waterers in general are great. My biggest problem with the system is if the electricity goes out the horses do not have any water available to them.
