Purchase: For riding the neighbors greenie, who is still quite young and changing shape, I needed a lift-front pad. The neighbor bought the Roma Pro Tek Wither Pad (Lift Front Comfort style) from Victoria Feeds - The Horse & Hound in Lindsay, Ontario, Canada. He paid around $30.00 Cdn without taxes.
Likes: I used to own the Wintec lift front pad and while the construction was okay, it could've used a few improvements. The Roma pad is superior as far as I'm concerned. Instead of the front lift panels being glued onto the pad (as the Wintec ones are) the lift front panels are molded right into the Roma pad. This eliminates any seams from where the panels would attach to the pad, and stops the panels from separating from the pad with use. There is enough clearance over the horses withers with this pad and it doesn't create any pressure points.
Dislikes: When using any riser pad like this, you need to use an english saddle pad that has long velcro straps to secure everything. Using one of these keeps your saddle pad, and the riser pad, in place. Using a saddle pad that only has a loop to go around the billet to secure it, I find that with use (and even just a simple one hour trail ride) the riser pad will slip back just a hair. It's not noticeable enough to cause problems, but the long velcro straps on other pads will hold the riser more securely.
Quality: Encapsulated shocking absorbing foam pad. Anatomically designed to provide maximum back protection and reduce stress to the shoulder muscles. Multi-layered with ventilation holes. Molded to fit high in the saddle, these thin and lightweight pads provide protective cushioning and alleviate pressure on the spine and withers.
Summary: The Wintec models runs around $50.00 Cdn from local tack stores but the Roma pad was only around $30.00 Cdn. It's a cheaper and better product as far as I'm concerned.
