Purchase: I've seen muck buckets sell for as much as $30.00 at some tack stores. Before I fainted from staring at the price tag, I went over to our local Home Hardware (various locations in Canada) and paid only $10.00 Cdn for this large bucket (with tax!).
The secret? At Home Hardware, it's not called a muck bucket. It's something like a gardening bucket or cleaning bucket. This proves my point that if you add the word "horse" to a product, it doubles or triples the price.
Likes: Our horse club bought a couple of these buckets for gymkhanas (for horse water). We used permanent marker to write our club name on the outside, as well as Horse Water in large block letters so nobody would walk away with them.
We fill them up and place them around the horse areas so our fellow equines can take a sip if they please. It's handy because not everyone brings their own water and buckets.
They hold 70 quarts of water, are super easy to clean up afterwards and have survived 3 show seasons so far!
Dislikes: I don't know if you get the same thing with the more expensive buckets, but these ones have faded a little in the sunlight. It hasn't weakened the plastic yet though.
Quality: Mid-duty plastic bucket with rope handles. Comes in a rainbow of colours, but we bought lighter ones so they wouldn't be as scary to horses (we all know horse-eating monsters hide in large, dark buckets!).
Summary: A decent quality bucket for an excellent price. We've only used them for horse water so far, but they are definitely fine around the farm as true muck buckets, to hold lots of grooming supplies or anything else for that matter.
Once these ones break, we'll certainly buy more from the same place.
