Purchase: My neighbor wanted a safe halter to use on his young (and very curious) horse. I recommended a breakaway style and was soon at the tack store to pick one up for him.
Victoria Feeds - The Horse & Hound in Lindsay, Ontario, Canada sells the economical Griffith breakaway halter with leather crown piece for around $18.00 Cdn with taxes.
Likes: For horses that need to wear a halter, the extra security of knowing your horse can free himself if he gets caught on something is nice.
Of course there's no substitute for walking your fields and checking your stalls to make sure things are horse-proof (or as horse-proof as they can be) but things do happen.
We like that the noseband and crown are adjustable (you can adjust the crown piece from either side).
Dislikes: The buckles are brass-plated, but you can see silver underneath (where some of the brass plate has worn away). It doesn't look all that great.
We also wish the snap at the cheek were easily replaceable (instead of the snap being sewn into some halters, you can get halters that use a loop to attach the snap. If it breaks, you just unloop the snap and put a new one in).
Quality: Single ply nylon halter with adjustable noseband and crown piece. Comes with a single ply leather crown which is replaceable if it wears out or breaks (replacement crowns are, I think, around $5.00 each).
Brass-toned silver buckles with a snap at the cheek. Comes in full, cob or pony and currently in 11 different colours.
Summary: An okay halter at a reasonable price. It's not the prettiest thing, but it's safe - and that's what matters.
