Category: Dressage Saddles
Purchase: I got this saddle from a small tack store, for $850. (Full prize was $1300). I needed a dressage saddle, because my others weren't particularly well made.
Likes: I like the fact that it's black, the knee blocks are well positioned, and that the flap folds into them easily. The knee flap is cushioned and soft. The billets look like leather, but the upper half is strong nylon. The leathers are fairly long (good for my fat-soon-to-be-thinner horse.). I got a wide tree, and the cantle is a bit cutback, and there's tons of clearance, but the saddle still fits the shoulders nicely. The back pads are shaped to fit the back, and the whole saddle distributes pressure nicely. I also like the way the saddle is kind of V-rigged. (The back billet is attached towards the back of the saddle, and angles back to the front billet.) It makes everything secure, and I don't have to tighten my girth as tight as I normally would. Not sure if this means anything, but my horse "magically" isn't blowing anymore.
Dislikes: The dye doesn't seem to be very deep (the flap, at the very back corner is a bit roughed up, and you can see a bit of the brown leather.) I'm hoping that the saddle is resistant to scratching...
Quality: The saddle seems very well made. The cantle is set high off the withers, but the shoulder points still fit the horse. (I think it will still fit her even when we get more muscle on her back.) Everything seems strong, and the saddle is actually fairly lightweight. Not as light as a synthetic, but light enough.
Summary: I feel really good about the saddle, and I think it will wear well.
Usefulness Rating: 2.55556 out of 5.
