Purchase: Custom ordered the saddle from Kate's Saddle Supply. With horn, quilted seat, and rear cinch rings, total was almost $2300.
Likes: Wow! Syd Hill saddles are truly the best Australian saddle. The leather is thick, the stitching and quality is second to none. The Station Poley is the economy-conscious model, i.e., least expensive one, and it's awesome. The quilted seat was a great addition. If you're custom ordering and have blown the budget anyway, definitely go for the quilted seat. The deep seat will enable you to stay in the saddle through pretty much anything that a buckin' bronco can dish out.
Dislikes: Custom ordering took about two months. Also, with the exchange rate being what it is, the cost of Syd Hill saddles has gone up.
Quality: It just doesn't get any better than this. Syd Hill makes their high-quality saddles on the Stylecast tree. Most of the Aussie-type saddles out there are cheaply made in India, and you get what you pay for: warped trees, cheap leather, uneven poleys, and low quality. Been there, done that and won't go that route again!
Summary: If you're thinking about an Australian saddle, bite the bullet and get the Syd Hill. Don't waste your money on the cheap Indian-made saddles no matter what the salesperson tells you; both you and your horse will be dissatisfied with anything but a high-quality Australian-made saddle. Also, Kate's sells the dual elastic undergirth, which is a definite plus.
