Toklat Myler
5" Western D Ring Comfort Snaffle
Western Bridle Acc
Manufacturer: Toklat Myler
Model: 5" Western D Ring Comfort Snaffle
Category: Western Bridle Acc
Purchase: I purchased the Myler D Ring Comfort Snaffle a couple weeks ago from Murdoch's Ranch store. My horse likes to play with the bit and seems to really dislike having one in his mouth altogether. The manufacturer of this bit claims that these bits will help a horse accept the bit. His teeth are fine, he is regularly floated. I paid about $70 for the bit.
Likes: The bit is made very well. The mouthpeice is sweet iron with copper inlays, so it should help out with salivation and keeping the mouth soft. The D's are stainless. I like the fact that the joint is covered and there is no risk of my horse's tongue or the roof of his mouth getting pinched. The bars are also curved to fit the shape of the horses mouth.
Dislikes: I was a little disappointed after I used this bit. I expected a miracle, and I think that's what the manufacturer wants you to do too. My horse was just as fussy with this bit than he is with his regular full cheek snaffle. A bit, regardless of the claims, cannot stop a behavioral habit that your horse has. I didn't notice any more responsiveness from him either, he was the same old horse with a more expensive piece of metal in his mouth. He did not pick up this bit any better than any other I've used. These are not cheap bits either, I would have hoped to see a difference with that price.
Quality: The quality is great. It has large, stainless steel D's, a sweet iron mouth with copper inlays. The joint of the snaffle is covered to prevent pinching or damage to the mouth. It's a nice heavy bit, contoured for the horses mouth, and I expect it would last for years if taken care of.
Summary: If you're looking to spend a lot on a nicely made, heavy bit, go ahead and get one of these. If you expect miracles, you may be disappointed. I don't think it will make your horse collect any better than he is trained to collect, and it won't necessarily correct any mouthing issues either.
