Purchase: My wife bought a used Steele Plantation saddle and absolutely loved it. I rode her horse and found it very comfortable. It was also about 6-7 pounds lighter than my saddle. Finally, I ordered a Steele Mountaineer with Western rigging from Custom Tree & Saddle in Ashland City, Tennessee. I paid $1,795 for the saddle.
Likes: The Steele Mountaineer fits me and my horse very well. I visited the workshop at Custom Tree & Saddle to start the process by taking pictures of my horse and talking with them about what I wanted. A couple of months later a saddle tree was shipped to me to test on my horse. I took some pictures and returned the tree with pictures and some suggestions for alterations. A couple of months after that I received the tree again with temporary rigging so I could ride my horse with the tree which I did three times. I returned it with some more pictures and a few minor alterations - primarily to fit me better. A couple of months after that I received the finished saddle. I find the fit and ride to be exceptional.
Dislikes: The latigo is a little thicker than I would prefer but that is a minor issue. The custom making process takes a while, but it is worth it.
Quality: The construction and materials used are the highest quality. The leather is top quality and I know from my wife's experience the saddle is well made and will stand up to a lot of hours of riding. The saddles also look really good on our horses. The saddle styles are simple - no carving - but I think it gives them an elegant appearance.
Summary: I am very, very pleased with my Steel Mountaineer saddle and with the professionalism of the Custom Tree & Saddle staff. If you're looking for a quality saddle that will fit you and your horse, give you a comfortable ride, and last a long time, I highly recommend Steele saddles by Custom Tree & Saddle.
