Purchase: I ordered this product from the internet after seeing it on television during a horse training show. We had built new stables and I didn't want to use rubber mats because they can be moved out of position by pawing and restless horses and are heavy and awkward to move. They also need to be replaced periodically because they become damaged. Stall Skins are installed once and are suppose to last 10 years. They are also suppose to save on bedding cost because they draw the urine through the surface to the prepared soil underneath to maintain a dry floor in the stable. Disinfection and odor control is handled using a diluted pine based household cleaner.
Likes: It does keep the floor surface dry as promised and doesn't move around. It also doesn't move or tear when the horses paw by the stall door. It is a really tough fabric like material. My husband was skeptical but was impressed when we took it out of the box to install it. Preparation of the soil was relatively easy as was installation of the Stall Skins. We did it in a day.
Dislikes: I installed these EXACTLY as per the directions including the 8" of bedding in each stall. The product claims much less bedding will be used so you will spend less. I still have urine soaked bedding. I have been turning it and disinfecting it which does have an impact on odor. I don't think that the suggested amount of bedding is needed. The 8" really don't seem to be of a benefit except to absorb urine. Since the Stall Skin is suppose to draw the urine down into the soil I would rather use 4" of bedding and replace small amounts when needed. The black 2" edging can be difficult to use when if wall studs extend out past the base board. Also, the washers provided to install the black edging were inadequate, plan on providing you own washers. We used 1 1/8 fender washers.
Quality: It's a quality product. I have no doubt it will last a minimum of 10 years. It is described as a neoplastic. It is a compressed product that feels like a heavy fabric. The product itself was flawless as was the edging.
Summary: I'm confident I made a good decision in selecting this for our new stalls. It will last a long time and be easy to maintain. Now that I have a handle on the amount of bedding to use I'll enjoy them even more.
We built a leach pit in the center of each stall according to the instructions provided and suggest that the landscape fabric should be the inexpensive type you can by at any discount or home improvement store. We bought professional quality which is much thicker. One layer of landscape fabric will be sufficient.
