Training Bit
Western Bridle Acc
Manufacturer: Mikmar
Model: Training Bit
Category: Western Bridle Acc
Purchase: I was a bit leery of the $130 price tag, so I borrowed one from a friend before buying. The bits are available at Mikmar.com
Likes: This is quite an amazing training tool. I start a lot of young horses, and like most trainers, headset seems to be one of the most important points of a young horse's education. I've never been able to get a nice headset without the use of drawreins or a martingale, and lots of training time. Usually not difficult to do, just time consuming. I was absolutely shocked when my three year old responded to the Mikmar training bit with a perfect headset, and no resistance whatsoever in introduction to a shank bit from a snaffle in the first lesson. The three points of pressure system is simply amazing. When you first pull back on the reins, the horse gets pressure across the bridge of the nose, as you continue to pull back, the mouthpeice rotates and encourages the horse to follow by tucking his head, and finally, curb strap pressure is added for a stop. Although it seems confusing if you've never used it, it's like a light bulb goes on when you see it in use. The transition from snaffle to shank has never been easier.
Dislikes: The bit does look a bit daunting if it's never been explained how they work. They seem big and harsh at first, but in fact it's quite the opposite.
Quality: The bit is made of lightweight aluminum, with a wide, flat mouthpeice, ported with a roller (you can order it with a curved low port mouthpeice if you want to), and has a cord that goes over the nose, through the shanks, and out the bottom to which you attach the reins. All of the Mikmar bits I've used have been very well crafted. I've never had any problems with them.
Summary: I highly, highly recommend Mikmar bits. They are well worth the price tag. Once you try them, nothing else seems to compare.
