Purchase: I received this saddle as a birthday gift 24 years ago and it was a used saddle at that time. I don’t know what was paid for it.
Likes: This is an older dressage saddle, possibly over 30 years old, but the quality is unmatchable in the newer saddles. It shows very little wear even thought I use it regularly. It is made of smooth bridle leather and is very durable, unlike the new soft leathers used on today’s saddles, which wear quickly. It has pencil knee rolls and a medium deep seat. Without all the extra padding of the newer dressage saddles, which lock one into position, in this saddle I have the freedom to move and adjust my seat to suit every situation. I have used it on everything from a small Arab to a 17 hand Saddlebred, and it has fit everything I put it on because of the cut back pommel. In this saddle I feel like I am riding the horse, not the saddle.
Dislikes: The only thing that might be unacceptable to some people are the short billets, but this doesn’t bother me.
Quality: The quality is unmatchable in saddles now-a-days; they just don’t make saddles like this any more! It is stitched throughout, with no rivets. The leather is smooth, flexible and very durable, showing virtually no wear even considering its age. It has a short billet system, and a cut back pommel which accommodates many different types of horses. The only padding is the pencil knee rolls, and the seat is of medium depth, allowing for close contact and freedom of movement for the rider.
Summary: If you can find one of these older Kieffer saddles, they are worth their weight in gold! Snatch it up as fast as you can!
