Viking II Midweight Euro Turnout
Horsewear
Manufacturer: Schneiders
Model: Viking II Midweight Euro Turnout
Category: Horsewear
Purchase: I was so excited to find this turnout on the website of Schneider's Tack for $57, and I had a $10 off coupon, which made the offer even more appealing.
Likes: The turnout was shipped to me very quickly, arriving about 3 days after ordering. I loved the fact that this blanket was advertised as 1200 denier for such a fabulous price. When I received the item it was a nice quality fabric, though not nearly as heavy a 1200 denier as a different blanket that I purchased from Schneiders for a different horse. I suppose that this is reflected in the price, but I was still pleased. The silky nylon lining was very smooth, and did not rub my Thoroughbred's shoulders at all. There was very soft fleece padding at the withers, and rings to attach a hood or neck cover. The waterproofing of this blanket has been very impressive, and the fiberfill is lofty and very, very warm. It is also extremely breathable.
Dislikes: The supposed 1200 denier was torn by normal play after about 2 weeks. The tail flap was hanging by a thread after about a month, and the nylon lining got very thin and began wearing through at the hips. The surcingles were too long and in order to keep the blanket from shifting to the side, I had to loop them around each other several times. The leg straps were way too short, more for smaller sized horse. The inside D-rings for the leg straps both ripped off within the 2nd month and the nylon lining ripped straight down the spine from tail to wither. The drop on the sides of the blanket are also not deep enough, leaving my TB unprotected underneath the belly.
Quality: The blanket seems to be put together well for the price paid, but it seems little thought went into the proper sizes and lengths of the surcingles and leg straps. I believe that this blanket is advertised as a tougher turnout than it really is. It is much more like a 600 denier turnout, and the nylon lining is too thin to stand up to even normal wear.
Summary: This could possibly be a nice turnout for a horse pastured alone, without access to anything that might snag the blanket. It will certainly keep a horse warm and dry, and is very breathable. I am disappointed in the fact that I will have to toss this turnout after only one season, and also the problems with the mechanics of the fit.
