Purchase: I ordered three of these online from Country Supply, also known as Horse.com. They were $15.99, now selling for $17.99 plus FOB. Country Supply has a great program called Country Cares, if you order from them they will rebate 5% back on most purchases to your charity of choice. If you don't have one in mind, please enter the code CANTER when you order, your contribution will go to support the Communication Alliance to Network Thoroughbred Ex-Racers. Look them up at canterusa.org.
Likes: These feeders work well at a low price to keep your horses from dumping over their feed tubs and spilling the grain all over. They are simplicity itself, you just pop it into a used tire. Easy to remove and clean--your horse will remove it for you, but they usually stray in place long enough for the meal to be consumed.
Dislikes: I had one BIG problem. The product instructions say to place within a 13", 14", or 15" tire. I came out in the morning and found my mare with her fetlock wedged between the 15" tire and the rigid lip of the feeder. If she had not been so sensible, she could have been badly hurt. As it was I had a 1400 pound draft cross with a size 3 hoof wedged so tightly it took two large adults to free her. The tire was like a 15 pound rubber bracelet on her ankle. I would strongly suggest anyone using this product to stick to a smaller tire diameter. Horses do paw at feeders and this could happen quite easily. I am still using the smaller tires with the feeders and have had no more problems.
Quality: After several months of use the feeders have held up with no signs of wear, even through freezing weather and rowdy young horses.
Summary: A useful product but do use care as to the size tire you select. I wish they were more flexible so if a horse got its foot through between the tire and feeder it would easily bend and pull free. I am experimenting with the old standard rubber feed tubs wedged into the tires.
