Manufacturer: Dominus
Model: Close Contact / Jumping Saddle
Category: Jumping Saddles

Purchase: I bought this saddle brand-new a few years ago for just over $1,000.

Likes: I bought the saddle after trying out lots of models; my lanky (18 hand!), high-withered thoroughbred at the time was really difficult to fit with any saddle (I had even used a cut-back on her...) This saddle, amazingly, fit her comfortably, no pinching or rubbing. A year later I used the same saddle on my new warmblood, a stocky gelding (15.5 hands, without the high withers)and it fit beautifully. I've never come across a saddle that can suit so many very different horses. For the rider it's great too. The seat is deep enough to give good grip, to really push the horse forward through the pelvis. I ride a lot without stirrups, and this is one of those saddles that lets me do this comfortably. I also like that it gives a real feeling of safety over the big jumps; even cross-country jumping it lets me concentrate less on my seat and more on my horse and the jumps ahead. The leather is great, durable and really beautiful, and maintenance is a cinch.

Dislikes: As the other reviewer pointed out, the billets were stiff at first, but they quickly softened up. They are also shorter than most, so sometimes a longer girth is needed.

Quality: The Dominus is super-quality. After years of daily riding, wear is minimal (mostly limited to the usual burnishing of the leg area.)

Summary: If you can find one, buy it! I have no idea why the saddle is discontinued now, it's really too bad. (And there aren't too many used ones floating around, because no one wants to give theirs up!)
