Purchase: I bought 2 saddles from Steve Edwards at Queen Valley Mule Ranch. One, the Trail Rider I paid $890 for after visiting with Steve over the phone. The second, the Trail Rider Light I bought for my wife while visiting QVMR and had Steve fit her personally. We paid $790 for it.
Likes: The quality of Steve's saddles is fantastic for the money. I am impressed with the amount of thought and innovation behind the tree and the build of these saddles. I've been riding my Trail Rider 2-3 times a week for 4 months and love the way it fits my mule and my own butt. I highly recommend his beta material for britchen and breast collar. It is indestructible compared to the leather version of each and really maintenance free.
Dislikes: The only thing I can say is I miss the look of leather for breast collar and britchen. Get leather if it bothers you. If I was just showing I would want it there, but I ride rough country and the leather breast collar I started out with broke and leather is much more labor intensive to maintain. His beta material is tougher and easier to maintain.
Quality: Excellent grade leather for the saddle itself over Steve's personally designed mule tree and a horn that is nearly impossible to break.
Summary: I loved working with Steve to get my mules outfitted. He knows his stuff and is willing to help you understand why things are set up the way they are. Its refreshing that he doesn't just do things the way its always been done, but he does the things that work best based on a wealth of experience, tradition be damned. Steve is a fine teacher. I highly recommend getting his input for your mules and loved the clinic he held in April 2008 at his ranch.
