The American 14" Barrel Saddle
Barrel Saddles
Manufacturer: American Saddlery
Model: The American 14" Barrel Saddle
Category: Barrel Saddles
Purchase: We purchased this saddle 3 1/2 years ago as a Christmas present for our daughter who was 9 at the time. We purchased it at a local feed/tack store who was offering 10% off everything in the store. The saddle, wool pad, splint & bell boots, and barrel reins were sold as a package deal for $650. If I remember correctly the saddle alone was right around $450.
Likes: Comfort. Durability. Easy fit. Light weight. This saddle has impressed us so much. My daughter has ridden in many saddles and loves the comfort of this one. While the medium oil leather has darkened with use, the saddle still looks beautiful. The rawhide on the horn is still tight as are the D-rings and conchos on the side of the saddle. Several barrel racers we know spent far greater money on the "high end" saddles and have had trouble with them fitting some of their horses. We have put this saddle on just about every shaped horse you could imagine and have no problem with the fit. 3 of the girls she trains with have had to replace their "high end" saddles because of poor fit, pinching or slipping. Not us! Until recently, this saddle fit my daughter like a glove. But now she is quickly outgrowing this saddle but doesn't want to give it up! We will be looking for a 15" American Saddlery Barrel Saddle for her.
Dislikes: The concho on the horn came off about a year after owning it.
Quality: The quality and construction is wonderful. My daughter rides in this saddle anywhere from 12-20 hours per week. Spread that over 3 1/2 years and that's a lot of time in this saddle. The quality and construction have truly impressed us. Her square skirt and the pommel have very nice basket weave tooling. The suede seat has held up beautifully without any tears. The fleece is still thick and in great shape. Structurally the saddle has remained sound. For the price we paid, I think we got way more than we expected.
Summary: I brag about her saddle to anyone who asks what she rides in. American Saddlery is the only company I would buy another barrel saddle from!
