Purchase: My trainer recommended Cloud Nine saddle pads for my thoroughbred gelding who has high withers and a moderately sensitive back. I wanted a high quality pad that was protective but breathable. So, I purchased a Cloud Nine saddle pad for $130. The price on this pad is appropriate for a customizable saddle pad of this quality. In fact, pads that are this level of quality usually sell for $150 to $300.
Likes: This pad is well-designed! It is one of the few pads I have purchased that was extremely breathable, yet very supportive. The pad easily allows air to flow under the saddle to prevent the build up of excessive heat. In addition, this pad does not collapse under my saddle like many pads I have owned did. However, the memory foam will not produce pressure points and conforms nicely to my horse. It is supportive but not over done in terms of thickness.
Dislikes: Nothing! I have been pleased.
Quality: Its outer shell is made of thick, soft fleece that is used to make two panels that contain memory foam. These panels velcro so that the pad can be disassembled and cleaned. All parts are replaceable, which is great. I would call this a well-made pad (solid stitching/good foam).
Summary: The first time you ride in the pad you will feel the difference. This pad may make you feel like you are sitting further off your horse's back, which you are. Nonetheless, this did not affect my feeling of contact or my horse's ability to feel my seat aids. I think that his increased comfort made him more free in his back, improving swing and impulsion. One thing I did do was gently pull the pad up into my gullet in the front of the saddle. It insured that when I seated my self in the saddle, compressing the pad, that the girth was the appropriate tightness.
Overall- GREAT pad. I am happy with my purchase!
