Purchase: About 10 years ago, my Mom's ancient Passier AP (I was using)was in desperate need of being re-done. A gal buying one of our young horses suggested a West Michigan saddler to do the job. Whitman had just gone out of business and the proprietor of the saddlery ended up with a couple 10 year old Passier AP's that were still new in the box in the back of the warehouse. I leaped (literally :) at the chance to get one and happily paid $1000 for the privilege.
Likes: The balance of a Passier has to be experienced to be believed. It all but tells you what to do with your legs...proper position is utterly effortless and the medium deep seat is secure and comfortable for dressage, xc, stadium, colts and hacking.
Dislikes: The only thing I can think of is the flaps- molded smooth leather over the blocks rather than suede/padded. Not a big deal but such arrangements might not be secure enough for a novice rider.
Quality: The quality is simply unreal. The saddle- already 10 years old, mind you- was like butter right out of the gate. It has one of the great older trees that fits ANYTHING. I have even used it on my purebred Percheron mares. It's been through a couple bona-fide wrecks-over-fences and has no more than a few scratches on the cantle that won't rub out. Since my mom's old saddle still has the majority of it's original stitching, and is estimated to be nearly 50 years old, I'm guessing my saddle will be around for some time.
Summary: I have tried lots and lots and lots of saddles, and only one saddle has ever come close- A friend has a German made Stubben dressage saddle that I enjoyed a great deal, but Passier's are available widely and will fit a massively broad range of horses. An older used Passier is the first thing any one looking for their fist saddle should consider.
