Sportage Helmet
English Chaps/Boots/Helmets
Manufacturer: Tipperary
Model: Sportage Helmet
Category: English Chaps/Boots/Helmets
Purchase: I purchased this helmet for myself a few years ago from my local tack shop. I didn't want to school in a hot velvet helmet, and liked the appearance of the Tipperary. I paid about $80 CAD.
Likes: I love how cool it is. Even in the summer, my head doesn't get too hot or sweaty. If it does, the vents let it dry really quickly, so you don't have to worry about your helmet being clammy when you put it on the next day. I like that it's a casual helmet, but still doesn't look like a little-kid bicycle helmet like a lot of other schooling helmets do. It's also really lightweight, and the padding can be removed to change the fit. Most importantly, it was the perfect size and shape for my head.
Dislikes: There's not a whole lot I dislike. The faux-leather chinstrap sometimes comes undone and needs to be put on again. I find the neoprene is uncomfortable without it. Also, one of the pads fell out of it at some point in time. I think it's because the velcro dots that hold it in are really small. I think new pads can be purchased. While it is supposed to be a schooling helmet, a lot of people at my barn wanted to show in them. Sadly, they're not the best to show Hunters in. Velvet covers can be purchased, but they just don't look good. The helmet can't be put at fault for this, though, because it was intended to be a schooling helmet.
Quality: It seemed to be very good! Aside from that one little pad, it stayed in one piece really, really well. I never had any problems with it. I recently took my first fall in it, and, like any other helmet on the market, it needs to be replaced. Since I'm on a tight budget and I really need a show-quality helmet, it might have to be replaced with a velvet one, but I'll definitely miss my Tipperary, and will buy another one later on. I did an awesome job at protecting my head when I fell, though!
Summary: It's an awesome helmet and a great price. I'd definitely recommend it for it's practicality and quality.
