Purchase: I bought this pad from Dover saddlery because I wanted to try it so bad because I never ever heard anything bad about it. I bought it for about $140 + S&H.
Likes: I love how quality this items is and how it is one of the prettiest sheepskin pads around! The sheepskin wool is very nice and thick and washes up so well with melp! It really is a gorgeous pad! It also has fantastic wither relief! You can convert and pad into a wither relief pad by using this 1/2 pad under it. Even the pad with rolled edges will fit nicely under a pad.
Dislikes: I do NOT like the open spine at all!!! I do not like it because instead of there being nothing on the horses spine the pad simply flattens out and the cotton part touches the horses back instead. The only place that there is good padding is at the withers, the back has almost no padding. If you slide your fingers under the pad while the horse is tacked up there is almost no contact to the horses back because the cushy part is the rolled edges and that part is on top of the pad and on the edges. I think that the open spine would work better if there were foam inserts under the sheepskin on the panels to lift the pad up.
Quality: This pad is made very well and looks beautiful.
Summary: If you are looking for a pad that is very cushy for your horse this is not the pad for you. This pad might be ideal for somebody that wanted to have nice wither relief but was not concerned with the back cushion.
