Myler Bit
Short Shank Comfort Snaffle, Wide Barrel Roller with Copper Inlay
Western Bridle Acc

Manufacturer: Myler Bit
Model: Short Shank Comfort Snaffle, Wide Barrel Roller with Copper Inlay
Category: Western Bridle Acc

Purchase: I have an Anglo-Arab gelding who I have been riding and showing Huntseat for about 8 years and decided it was time for a new challenge - western! My horse is extremely sensitive and very forward-moving, and was having trouble adjusting to the slower pace of western. We did his initial training with a regular snaffle, then needed to move to a shank bit for showing, so we started out with a Tom Thumb (did not like), then proceeded to try several different bits from curb bits to straight bits and a variety of shank lengths. My horse did not like any of these bits and would not relax into the bit at all. After much investigation and a lot of research, I purchased a Myler Comfort Snaffle with short shanks and a wide barrel roller with copper inlays from a local tack store for $69.95.

Likes: The best part of this bit is that my horse likes it - the comfort snaffle sits in his mouth just like a normal snaffle and due to him having a low palate and a sensitive mouth he took to this bit a lot better. The shorter shanks that flex back towards him also was a plus - with just a slight raise of the rein he relaxes his poll and drops into the bit nicely, where he used to fight the longer, straight shanks. Being a horse that is "too smart" at times, the barrel roller seems to act as a pacifier and helps keep his mind occupied in the show ring or during those long, slow workouts. The copper inlays help him salivate and keep his mouth nice and moist. I also really like the fact that each side of the mouthpiece moves individually, so when I want to pick up a shoulder and work one side its much easier and I get a quicker and better response compared to a solid mouthpiece.

Dislikes: Unfortunately the Myler bits are a bit pricey compared to a "regular" bit, however I feel the response from my horse and knowing he is more comfortable is well worth the cost. One other downfall about my particular bit is that after about 3 years, despite wiping the bit down after use, it seems to have a little bit of rust on the mouthpiece.

Quality: Construction and the whole idea behind the Myler line is great. I've switched a couple horses that we had in for training to a Myler bit with good results - softer mouths, more relaxed neck and polls and better responses to rein pressure. Despite the small amount of rust on my bit I feel that these are high quality bits and the variety of choices out there make it possible to pretty much custom design a bit for your horse & needs.

Summary: The Myler bits are a great choice for anyone who is conscientious about their horse's mouth and wants a bit that they are comfortable and more responsive in. Though a bit pricey, the benefits seem to exceed the expense.
