Purchase: Originally I was looking for the T4 Broadback saddle at Greenhawk, but they were not yet stocking them, so I was shown the Maxam Broadback on clearance. Originally $500, I purchased this saddle for under $200 Canadian!
Likes: I love the wide gullet that does not taper and shorten too much like other saddles at the back. Also, it includes Fish inserts, which help alleviate any minor saddle problems affecting how it sits on the horse's back. It has a nice, easy-care synthetic material and velvety 'faux-suede' knee rolls and seat. Even the girth straps on the saddle, which I was initially concerned about after seeing them on other saddles, have proven to be excellent and pleasant to use.
Dislikes: The main thing I don't like is that some debris can be difficult to remove from the velvet surface, however I find it repels most materials (dirt, horsehair, etc.) quite easily.
Quality: Excellent, couldn't be happier, hopefully I'll have many years of use out of it. One of the best Thorowgood saddles I've ever seen and ridden in.
Summary: This saddle fits my broadbacked Haflinger extremely well, while suiting my own needs as a low-cost synthetic solution that is versatile and relatively durable. The fish inserts really do work when used correctly. I have noticed freer shoulder movement in my mare as well since buying this saddle, and her attitude towards riding has greatly improved! I absolutely love this saddle, something I can't necessarily say about all other Thorowgood saddles!
