Purchase: I ordered my first pair of Old Mac's from Dover Saddlery and paid $145 for them. I later bought another pair from a local tack shop for the same price. I also bought the Old Mac's Inserts ($14 for a pair) and the Pastern Wraps ($20).
Likes: These boots worked wonders on my Thoroughbred Paint mare. When I bought her, she had shoes on all four feet, and her feet were falling apart. She kept losing shoes, and eventually there was nothing to hold the shoe on. My farrier and vet told me that she needed to be put on stall rest to let her hooves grow out. She began acting very mean after being cooped up in the stall for a week. I asked my vet if there was a way to get around this, and showed him a pair of Old Mac's. He said my mare could go out for a few hours a day if she wore boots on all four feet. She never came in from the field foot sore, and the boots were wonderful. Her feet are very narrow, so the boots occasionally spun on her foot. I bought the inserts, and the boots now stay firmly in place. Now my mare has shoes on, but I put the boots on over her shoes when it's muddy. I also use the boots on trails where the footing is quite unpredictable. I also used these boots on my Appendix mare while trying to transition her to bare feet during the winter. She began to get rubs on the back of her pastern, but the pastern wraps fixed this immediately. I use these boots for everything from trail riding to jumping courses to barrel racing. They are perfect for whatever your want. The variety of sizes guarantees that you find the perfect fit for your horse.
Dislikes: I did have a few problems with the boots spinning and rubbing, but the inserts and pastern wraps fixed the problems. The boots are also a little hard to clean, but I wouldn't let that keep you from buying them. They were a little hard to get on my squirmy mare's back feet at first, but once we both got used to them, it was really easy to get them on and off.
Quality: I used the boots almost every day on my horse through the summer and early fall, and not one part of any boots has started to fall apart. Both of my horses are very hard on blankets and manage to find the worst areas of the fields, but they haven't managed to do anything to the Old Mac's. The tried on the bottom of the boots has just now started to wear slightly from walking on roads for trail rides.
Summary: I would recommend these boots to anyone. They are great for a horse that has bad feet or trouble keeping shoes on. They also helped transition my horse back to bare feet. They don't get in the way during any discipline. The company has made great products to help with the rubbing and spinning of the boots, so you don't have to worry about that. These boots are the best product I have ever gotten. They seemed a bit expensive at first, but now I look at all the money I've saved by not having to replace shoes or pay for glue-ons. Plus, my horse loves them!
