Purchase: I purchased these for my barefoot older gelding for the few times a year I take him on rockier trails than he is used to. He has a wide, round foot, and these seemed like they would fit his shape well. Also, I wanted something very easy for my husband to apply as otherwise I end up doing it, and that would stay on without extra measures. Purchased a size 3 pair from Valley Vet for approximately $120.
Likes: They fit this horse great, are extraordinarily easy to put on, and make my gelding very happy to crunch across rocks and gravel. Stay on through every type of terrain, including water and fetlock deep sucking clay mud.
Dislikes: I thought they could use a better breakover. My horse trips on them a bit as he is barefoot 99% of the time and not used to the bulk. A bevel at the toe would probably help that. Also, I'm a little disappointed in the life of the tread - after just a few relatively short rides on gravel (less than 5 miles each) they are showing wear and gouges in the bottom. There's a definite tendency for "stuff" to get down the back of the boot, including a sharp piece of gravel that wedged itself in there and caused a small injury. Definite potential for rubs on the heels if used for longer periods - I noticed some evidence of friction after 2-3 miles of riding. Traction in slippery mud is marginal.
Quality: Very well-made, top quality leather which seems to be very waterproof. Heavy stitching everywhere which so far shows no signs of wear. Heavy-duty velcro does it's job, except for the little keeper tab that goes over the straps which has lost its "stick" after a few muddy forays.
Summary: A nice boot for the casual rider who wants something easy to use on occasion. Not recommended for any hard or lengthy trail use.
