Category: Fly Control
Purchase: You can find these online at Horse.com and Jeffers Equine for around $14 to $16. I have also bought these at my local feed and tack stores. The unit comes with 2 fly strips that are contained within a plastic curved surface housing. The current design being sold is a curved surface that has the poison bait sprayed on one side and there is one vial of fly attractant located on the bottom front.
Likes: I have been buying the Starbar Quikstrike fly abatement strips for over 5 years. I have used them in barns with and without fly spray control systems. The old design flat fly strips when placed in a bucket in the barn aisle would attract and kill hundreds of flys in one day. People were amazed at how many dead flies the strips were killing and were always asking us where they could buy some. The original design was a flat surface that was coated on both sides and had 2 vials of fly attractant, one at each end of the fly strip. The strips would easily last 2-3 months if kept from becoming wet. You can literally see a fly land, feed and start it's death twitch within seconds of feeding. Oddly enough, the more dead flys that landed on the strip to feed, the more that seemed to be attracted to it. Even the dead flies in the bucket that was catching the dead flies seemed to attract more flies. The fly strips were far more effective at attracting flies and killing than the traditional fly scatter bait sprinkles; less of an eye sore than the large containers that collect all of the dead flies in a decomposing soup mix; and have minimal smell.
Quality: Construction quality of the Starbar Quikstrike Fly Abatement strips is good. They are intended to last for 2 months and I have not had any issue with the units physically failing due to use.
Summary: The quality on the other hand is directly related to the effectiveness of the product. The old flat design was definitely a 5 star product, but the new curved design rates 1 star at best. Seems like most everything used on the farm has increased in price this year. (Except for the average selling price of horses.) I would have paid more for a product that worked, than paid the same price for a product that does not. I will not be buying any more of the curved strips and I would not recommend them to anyone else. Many of the local feed stores I visited on my quest to find some remaining inventory of the old design were getting the same feed back from disappointed farm customers. Those stores were recommending the new flat design QuikBayt feed strips made by Bayer.
