Dakota Saddles
Model 720 Custom Reiner
Reining Saddles
Manufacturer: Dakota Saddles
Model: Model 720 Custom Reiner
Category: Reining Saddles
Purchase: Paid $1420 from Cultured Cowboy through Chuck. (Base saddle was $670) Wanted a 17 inch custom reiner designed for my needs. Had special Steele reining tree, one piece slick seat w/bicycle seat, 5 inch cantle, rawhide trim on cantle & stirrups, etc. Matching breastplate. Approached $1100 mark. Decided on special tooling & oiling & ended up at $1420. (Didn't know this until the final billing when saddle arrived.)
Likes: Excellent saddle, soft leather, good workmanship, very attractive tooling and design and very, very comfortable. Positions me exactly where I want to be.. and even suitable for posting when necessary. Probably the most or one of the most COMFORTABLE saddles I have been in. Previously owned Circle Y, Crates, Billy Royal, etc. Still own a Circle Y 16 in equitation seat High cantle is excellent for trail riding. I definitely like the saddle....
Dislikes: Problems are not with the saddle but with the communications with Cultured Cowboy. The stirrups fenders were cut a little short.. Originally ordered for 30 in inseam, but changed to 31 before the order was finished in the same phone conversation. Apparently the dealer (Chuck) didn't make the change as the billing eventually showed 30 in inseam.. Leathers are let out to the next to last notch for my legs... definitely too short. Price for upgraded tooling was never given to me. They had my credit card info and apparently did not see the need to give me a price. I left for a trip and was unable to get a price out of Chuck, even when i got back. "Don't worry, I am sure it won't be very much, but the billing dept hasn't figured out a price yet."
Quality: Excellent saddle probably as a base unit ($670)and still an Excellent saddle with the quality upgrades (which put it in the $1400 range) Upgraded fleece and leather for one piece seat, etc put this in the upper mid range saddles. Well made.. Can ride in it for ever.. And it will look better as it ages. Already evident by my riding and oiling... Well constructed. Dakota Saddle standing behind product as rigging was mixed up due to communication problem between me and Cultured Cowboy (Chuck). Cost me $40 plus shipping 2 ways to correct it, but Dakota went all out to make me happy.
Summary: Would buy another Dakota in a minute. Absolutely would... But not from Cultured Cowboy. Communication was difficult.. Hard to get hold of Chuck ONCE the saddle was ordered... and he screwed up the process costing me time and money. I gave them a chance to correct the rigging at their expense ($40 plus shipping) and they quickly ignored it. I had my own business before retiring. I would have not allowed this transaction to end as it did, especially after the heavy billing that took place. (Rate 4 for saddle .. 1 for Cultured Cowboy.)
