Purchase: I bought this muzzle on ebay for $30 plus shipping. I have a gelding who is very aggressive orally to other horses but I didn't want to totally isolate him. I needed him to be able to graze but not bite the other horses in the pasture.
Likes: I really like the muzzle itself. It is padded with fleece and the wire cage is very tough. It can be attached to a halter, although it came with a bridle. My horse has no problem drinking with the muzzle on. Also, the bridle was big enough to fit over his face and I didn't have to get extensions on it, like the first muzzle I bought, which was too small for my horse who wears an average sized halter.
Dislikes: There are a few things. To begin with, it only lasted a few outings when the bridle, which was nylon (and should have been leather for safety's sake...another dislike), shredded mysteriously and it fell off his face. The throatlatch was very tight, which made me nervous. Even with the fleece, it did rub his chin raw in one place about an inch long. Also, because the muzzle was rounded, it wasn't quite as easy for him to eat with it on as with it off, and he did lose weight rather quickly as he got frustrated easily and would give up on trying to eat. He's an OTT TB, so he's a very hard keeper anyhow.
Quality: The bridle was a tad small for a thoroughbred. The bridle itself was rather cheap and fell apart rather quickly. However, the muzzle itself is rather durable and very high quality.
Summary: If you can buy the muzzle without the bridle, save some money and buy it without the bridle. Dover sells this one without the bridle but with hooks to attach it to the halter. I will be buying some hooks to do the same thing with my muzzle. A leather halter and this muzzle seems like the safest, most effective way to keep a horse from biting. Overall, I was highly impressed with the muzzle, which is the best one I've ever bought, but not satisfied at all with the bridle.
