Purchase: My girl friend suggested this book to me because of it's relevance to psychology and horses. I had been reading a lot of Monty Roberts and she thought it would be a good follow up to his methods of horse communication. The price on the book jacket is 24.95, and I've seen it at all major bookstores. The copy I read was from the local library. I'd love my own copy but had textbooks to buy...
Likes: This is one of the best books I've read about human/animal non-verbal communication. It does something incredably daring, and does for the most part does it well, in exploring 'telepathic' emotional connection. This is done most effectively through her stories of working with horses as therapists for troubled people, and how the horses were able to connect with people on a level no one could possibly imagine. It made me realise how sensitive to emotion that animals actually are, and helped me learn to use emotion more effectively in dealing with horses.
Dislikes: Conversely, Kohanov jumps into the deeply spiritual side of her experience a little to quickly in the narrative. It is necessary to the timeline of her story, but it makes for a weak intro, and might turn off a more skeptical reader. She talks about communicating telepathically with horse ancestors et. But, after reading the whole book, I assure you it is all pulled into perspective and wrapped up very nicely.
Quality: The book is well written with an overall feminist leaning. It could have delved a little more deeply for physical explainations of what was going on emotionally between horses and people.
Summary: I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in human/animal communication, or anyone who wants one more reason to apreciate their horse.
