Manufacturer: Dakota Saddle
Category: Trail Saddles
Purchase: I was having a hard time fitting my new gelding and after a number of calls I ended up at The Cultured Cowboy. Chuck took the time to fit the forms I brought to the saddles he had and I bought a Dakota saddle. The model I bought has a few options on it such as the upgraded synthetic fleece, the hard seat, saddle strings, leather billets instead of the nylon ones, and breast strap D's. I had my own stirrups so I didn't bother with theirs.
Likes: I had never owned a Dakota and was skeptical about the quality for such a low price (about $800). The leather was excellent, the "tooling" was OK, and the overall appearance and feel was surprisingly good. I was particularly impressed with the feel of the leather. It had the feel and suppleness of a much more expensive saddle. It felt good to sit in and you got the feeling that you were sitting IN a saddle not just ON one.
Dislikes: The conchos that came with the saddle were cheap. I was disappointed in them but it was a fast and easy fix. It in no way affected the ride or feel of the saddle.
Quality: As I mentioned in the "Likes" section above, the quality of the leather and overall feel of the saddle was so much better then I would have expected from a saddle in that price range. I liked the fact that the saddle was made in the US and not imported.
Summary: After riding in the saddle for the past month or so (I ride nearly every day) the saddle feels great. The leather is getting the "used look" of a nice patina as it darkens from use and oiling. I have much more expensive saddles but that has become my "go to" saddle of choice for every day riding.
