Purchase: I received this as a Christmas gift.
Likes: Any helmet hat meets current safety standards technically does the same job, but if the styling or other factors prevent you from wearing it, then it does no good at all.
This helmet has somewhat western styling so that you don't look ridiculous wearing it riding western. It has a larger brim to cut down on sun glare and I find that this is a big benefit. It is comfortable to wear and is adjustable, including coming with a couple of different padded bands to adjust fitting. It also comes w/ a carry bag - not an exciting bag, but a nice extra.
Dislikes: Style-wise, it will never be a cowboy hat, but hey if you live on the east coast like me those are not exactly in style either. I felt a little funny wearing this on a week long pack trip in Montana, but when another guest's horse took a spill & I was the only one wearing a helmet, those folks in cowboy hats were wishing they were as smart as me (the other person was fortunately not injured).
Also the adjustment straps seem to slip a little bit sometimes between uses, but then again I sometimes hang the helmet by the straps.
Quality: After 2 years of heavy use (trail riding 3-4 days a week at home, plus 2 Montana vacations of 80+ mile pack trips, w/ the helmet often tossed on the ground when not in use), it definitely isn't new & there is a little bit of wear at some of the seams.
Summary: A good helmet hat does the job w/ a few extras (styling & wider brim); comfortable; durable construction. Bottom line, you could be satisfied w/ a cheaper schooling helmet, but if you do a lot of trail riding, you will be happy if you choose the Dakota.
