Likes: What a remarkable and interesting pad! Made of cork granules from a suber tree, this pad is kinda like a bean bag, though its baffled so the granules don't end up in one lump. Its a thick lofty pad that fills in the gaps naturally... for instance, hollows behind the withers, bridging saddle, lopsided, etc. Its very thick, but compresses down as you ride, though the granules don't compress, they just start fitting together. The pad is lovely to ride, and though I do feel a bit perched when I start off, within 15 min, it settles down perfectly. It doesn't heat my horse's back up, and when I use this pad, he's magical and moves out so freely and happily.
Dislikes: Though it settles down, its still a very thick pad, so I can only use it with saddles that are at least a little too wide for my horse... trying to put this pad under a close fitting saddle would probably not work. Though I hear they are fabulous for treeless saddles. It takes a good 15 min for the pad to settle in, so there is lots of girth tightening to be done. I also had to buy the next size up girth to accommodate the loft of this pad.
Quality: Its extremely well made. Easy to care and clean for, the cotton outer shell is indestructible. Hair somehow doesn't get all stuck inside the fabric, it just brushes cleanly off. After riding, the pad takes the form of the horse's back, which is neat, and one shake and its back to being loose and ready to ride again. They say it can be ridden wet, though its always kept my horse' back cool and dry.
Summary: If you're having saddle fit problems, this is a very interesting pad to try.... it doesn't fit every problem, I had a saddle that was vastly too wide and bridged terribly and it did not magically solve that for me... but when used with some of my mildly ill-fitting saddles, the reaction from the horses is amazing. This pad is sold in the uk and I haven't seen them sold in the US other than used on ebay.
