Purchase: I purchased this saddle online with a tree loan and photo fitting option for about $800 total.
Likes: It is a fairly nice looking saddle. I chose the leather cordura option, and the saddle is light weight and easy to carry. The site offers many choices of leather, leather and cordura, riggings, fittings and saddle styles for horses, draft horses and mules. The option of custom fit seems nice for someone who doesn't live in an area where they can buy a saddle from a saddle maker and do on site fitting for a horse or mule.
Dislikes: The "custom" wood tree does not fit the horse after following instructions from company, including photographing loaner trees on the horse and sending jpegs for their calculations. Montana Mountain Saddle did not offer approval of final custom tree. This is essential. I did not ask for this, but assumed their calculation would be correct. Front of tree fits pretty good, but back of tree is too high, causing pressure points at shoulder blades. I cannot use it. They do not accept returns on custom saddles and would not agree to take the saddle back for corrections.
Quality: Construction is fair to average; quality is fair to average. I believe the maker must have made a calculation error when constructing the final tree. Additionally, the small D-rings for breast collar attachment rotate and do not stay in place.
Summary: If buying a custom saddle from them, I recommend that you get written confirmation that buyer has final approval option of actual tree on the actual horse with photos (jpeg) before saddle is constructed. Be careful.
