Category: All Purpose Saddles
Purchase: I bought this saddle from Middleburg Tack Exchange in Middleburg, VA for $250.00. It came with two extra gullets, stirrups, and matching webbers.
Likes: This is a great multi-discipline saddle. Like all newer Wintecs, the gullets are interchangeable, allowing the saddle to fit a variety of horses. The Equisuede seat is not only comfortable, but gives me extra "stick" if a horse shies. The material which the flaps are made of seem to be much softer and more pliable than those on the Wintec 500 models or the Pro Dressage II. It has leather billets, which I highly recommend, as the synthetic billets on the 500 and 250 lines can be hard to adjust at times. It is also the easiest to change gullets on. I like the fact that I've never had a problem getting my legs in a correct position in Wintec saddles (I've ridden in the 500 AP, the 500 Close Contact, and the Pro Dressage II). Different saddle brands seem to work better for different riders' anatomies, and I've always liked the Bates/Wintec models. Like all Wintecs, this saddle is very easy to clean. It has the Cair air panel system, which some rave about and others view as horrible. I can't give an opinion either way, because I use a sheepskin pad, which cushions the horse's back significantly.
Dislikes: Once in a while I miss the smell of leather, but then I go to the barn and walk in the tack room, and I'm set for a while.
Quality: All of the Wintecs I've ridden in have been well put together. Even my trainer's old 250 with the fabric seat was holding up great and was surprisingly comfortable. The 2000 AP seems to be built of the best materials Wintec has used, to date.
Summary: During the past 3 years, I'm embarrassed to say that I have owned 15 saddles (I like to think of them as extended test rides). These have included, but are not limited to saddles by Stubben, Crosby, Passier, Collegiate, County, and Albion. At the end of this lengthy experiment, the Wintec 2000 All Purpose is the one I'm keeping.
