Purchase: I purchased the pad online from Len Brown's shop. I paid $570 including pad, liner, inserts, international shipping and customs taxes. After being tired of using around 7 different saddles over the year to accomodate my little stock horse's weight fluctuations and to adapt to the activity chosen, this without considering my own comfort, I was looking for a pad which could work with less saddles (like 2, 1 for arena/multi-purpose, 1 for long trail rides with saddle bags). After reading a lot of reviews, I decided to give it a try.
Likes: I like the close contact feel. You feel every muscle of the horse moving, but due to the plates in the pad, the saddle doesn't move around with the muscles. You just feel but without interference.I could give up any breast collar or crupper, the saddle stays in place without needing to cinch up too tight, even on our steep mountain trails. The horse's gaits and lateral flexibility improved. No more slowing down in slopes or at a cant. No more brutal plunging of the head at a lope every 10 strides to try to throw the saddle back behind the shoulders. The shoulder asymmetry disappeared. And to my surprise, the hooves showed signs of more even wear patterns (the horse is barefoot). Much less of wearing more the outer side of the fronts and squaring the hind toes.
Dislikes: The felt liner burns the horse at the loins. This can be due either to the material, or to the fact that this short horse feeling free under the saddle has much more hinds activity (lateral and vertical). I had to replace it with a leather liner. Although I would pull up the back strap holding both halves of the pad up into the saddle gullet, it would always end up pressing down accross the spine and the horse would get a bump after riding. I either need to add a felt liner with spine cut-out or tie it up to the crupper ring (if any) with a leather string.
Quality: The pad is well made, with solid material, the top is water and dirt repellant, I never had to clean it. The package (pad, inserts, liner) comes with instructions for use and cleaning. Super easy shimming.
Summary: It works as advertised, I'm very pleased, so is the horse. However, for the price, I would have expected to be able to use it alone without needing to customize it or to combine it with another pad.
Usefulness Rating: 3 out of 5.
